The Third Degree Burn is where each week we subject a different artist to a barrage of random and ofttimes fairly meaningless questioning. This week we ask Where's Leslie? to feel the third degree burn.
Name & Rank: Mir - Front runner/vocals/lyricist, Zipp - Front runner/vocals/lyricist .... We pass the baton.
Serial Number (Age): Mir: 24, Zipp: 23
Group: Where's Leslie?
Let’s begin:
Where are you from (hometown) and where are you now:
Mir: My hometown is the Bay. That's San Francisco/Oakland area for those who don't know. We both grew up in Los Angeles, CA where we recently relocated to after a stint in The Big Apple.
Zipp: I'm born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I love me some New York but I'm excited to be back.
When did you start performing?
Mir: We started performing in March of 2009. Shout out to Forrest Renaissance and The Eclectic Ride in New York giving us our first break.
Zip: We've been performing together as "Where's Leslie?" since March of 2009 but have both been on stages performing individually since our adolescent years.
How do you describe your music to people?
Zipp: That's one of the hardest questions for us to answer. We usually go with Hip Hop/Rock/Soul fusion. When people come to our shows, they usually say it's unlike anything they've ever heard before.
Mir: We just make the music that we feel and the music that we like. Because there isn't another group exactly like us to compare us to or a category to throw us in, I feel its best to put it out there and let people figure it out as they will.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Mir; Work hard for what you believe you can do, despite of what others think you can't. You are always your biggest obstacle.
Zipp: "Whether you think you can or you can, you are right." - Henry Ford... also, to be patient. It's marathon not a sprint.
Favorite new song from the past year:
Mir: "Heartbreaker" by MSTRKRFT feat John Legend
Zipp: Ooooo that's my favorite Mir! Hmmm... I'm gonna go with "Shining Down" by Lupe Fiasco feat Matthew Santos
Mir: Haha! That's my other favorite.
Your most favorite new group:
Mir: US! Just kidding... haha. Truth be told, there is a wealth of new talent to choose from. It's really hard pinpoint just one.
Zipp: Yea. Nowadays you're presented with new talented artists almost on a daily/weekly basis so that's a hard question. But I do enjoy Chester French, Pac Div, White Tie Affair, and Does It Offend You, Yea?
Your favorite song of all time:
Zipp: Okay, first off, that's like asking me to pick one thing to eat for the rest of my entire life. Nearly impossible. We listen to so many different genres, and artists, and cultures... Plus it all depends on mood and atmosphere of the moment.
Mir: I'm just plain offended you asked me that.(smiles)
Group/Artist you’d like to work with most:
Mir: Wyclef, Andre 3000, Melanie Fiona, John Mayor, Kanye...
Zipp: Cee-Lo, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, B.o.B, 1500 or Nothin... really anyone with great energy and talent who isn't afraid to experiment.
Last great concert you saw:
Zipp: I LIVE for live shows. We go to as many as we possibly can. Lady Gaga and Janelle Monae were pretty freaking awesome. Those stick out in my mind.
Mir: Yea. Gaga was definitely dope. Also, Erykah Badu on Governor's Island. Wale and the UCB Band when Colin Monroe opened in NY. I am blessed to be able to attend a lot of great concerts.
Last great film you saw:
Mir: Funny People. Lol... but District 9 for its excellent social commentary.
Zipp: I was late on the Slumdog Millionaire train. All the new action movies have surprisingly pleased me too (i.e. Transformers, G.I. Joe, Wolverine)... how could I forget THE HANGOVER! Hilarious.
A popular band you think should be more obscure:
Zipp: Black Eyed Peas... no offense, but I enjoyed their music more when they were less popular.
An obscure group you think should be more popular:
Mir: Semi Precious Weapons... I love them! I love their music and style. They dare to just be themselves.
Your favorite musical instrument:
Zipp: Saxophone
Mir: Ok Lisa Simpson.(smiles)
Zipp: Haha. I think... no... I KNOW I can listen to John Coltrane all day.
Mir: Drums... hands down! I wish I could I play them for real but I'm mean with it on Rock Band.
Your last performance:
Zipp: Our last show was on June 30th with a powerhouse of female talent in New York right now.
Your favorite City to perform in:
Zipp: We've only performed in New York so far and it was awesome.
Mir: But I feel like that's the best place to start because one thing about a New York crowd is they won't lie.
Your strangest fan moment:
Zipp: We've been asked to send out autographs a few times. It was pretty unexpected because we still are in the early stages of development and its weird to see or hear people react to us in that manner.
Mir: I had a weird Myspace stalker but I think that can happen to pretty much anybody. I just hope he doesn't show up to shows like he promised.(smiles)
Your favorite venue:
Zipp: The House of Blues has been a loooong time favorite. I love the energy in there. No matter what city I'm in.
Mir: I like the House of Blues for more intimate shows, but to really rock out, I like the Nokia Theaters in LA and NY.
If you had your own country what would you name it?
Zipp: LOVE
Mir: DO NOT DISTURB
